Chabad - Project Pride Centre Lifeline - About
Chabad Project Pride was founded, in 1989, by Rabbi Ronnie
Fine, then a McGill University Chaplain, who saw firsthand the devastating effects
of substance abuse on students and their families.
He came to understand that it was important to take people from a bad space into a good place -a place where they would know that they would be treated with dignity and respect.
Fundamental to this philosphy is his belief that every individual is as unique as their individual thumbprints, and as such, they have a unique purpose in the world. He encourages people to ask, "What am I needed for in this world to help make it a better place?"
Chabad Project Pride started with his counselling individuals and developed into a community and school outreach program where he and volunteers would offer drug awareness and addiction prevention talks to children, teens and young adults.
In 1996, Centre Lifeline was opened as a crisis centre where people in distress could call or visit and get the support they need. Since then, the Centre has attended to the needs of over 85,000 individuals from all walks of life.
The Centre now has four full-time qualified counsellors, in addition to volunteers, who respond to those who abuse substances, including marijuana, cocaine, heroin, methadone, crack, LSD, crystal meth, ecstasy, PCP, inhalants, prescription drugs and alcohol, and also help those living with gambling and behavior addictions.
The core philosophy of Chabad Project Pride - Centre Lifeline is that an individual must be treated as a whole. In this regard, mental health issues such as dual-diagnosis, depression, bipolar depression, compulsive behaviors, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), borderline personality and anxiety disorders, and schizophrenia are taken into consideration.
Also, we work with family members and loved ones who may be, unwittingly, enabling addictive behavior.
Rabbi Fine also operates Chabad Queen Mary, a Jewish outreach and education center that holds daily services, and is a part of the worldwide network of Chabad-Lubavitch. Rabbi Fine and his wife, Simcha, have ten children and three grandchilden.
